5 players you may not know are without a club
It is becoming increasingly difficult for players to find new clubs after being released or allowing their contracts to expire. A lot of youngsters released by big clubs then find it hard to get back into the game. However, it is the same for older and more established players too.
Here are five players you may not know are free agents.
The 33-year-old French international has been without a club since being released by Premier League side Crystal Palace in the summer. The central midfielder has played for Marseille, AC Milan, Palace and Arsenal on two separate occasions. He left the Gunners for Milan in 2008 but returned to the London club in 2013. Despite only playing 13 games for Palace last season, you would think an international midfielder who has played over 400 games in a career spent playing in the highest level in France, Italy and England would be on the radar of some clubs?
The Italy international was released by Fiorentina in the summer and has not found a new club since. He has spent the last two seasons on loan in Spain with Levante and Celta Vigo so did not play for Fiorentina for two years after falling down their pecking order. The former Manchester United, Villarreal and Parma is still only 30-years-old and could do a job for a side that is lacking goals.
The 34-year-old right-back has become a regular starter in the Premier League during his spells with Arsenal and Manchester City. He has been a free agent since leaving City in the summer. Before coming to England in 2007 to join Arsenal, Sagna played in France for Auxerre. He has made 65 caps for France and is a vastly experienced defender, he would be a useful signing for someone out there.
The German midfielder played a key role for Sunderland under Sam Allardyce during the 2015/16 Premier League season when the Black Cats escaped relegation. However, the 2016/17 season for Kirchhoff was plagued by injury and he only played seven games and was released at the end of the campaign when Sunderland was relegated under David Moyes. The former Schalke, Bayern Munich and Mainz man is only 27 and if kept fit he would be a great signing for a German side or at least an English Championship outfit.
The 31-year-old defender left Championship side Norwich City in the summer and has failed to find a club since. He was training with Birmingham City but left them after Harry Redknapp was sacked. The former Metz, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Norwich City centre-back still finds himself without a club.
It is a shame to see these players without a club and hopefully, in the coming months, they are snapped up by sides looking to bolster their squads for the remainder of the season.
