Arsenal’s squad review: Who stays or goes in midfield?

Wednesday 8th August 2018

Somewhat unusually, Arsenal has been heavily engaged in this summer transfer window. The Gunners have not only welcomed Bernd Leno, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Stephan Lichtsteiner, they’ve also acquired two new central midfielders.

Creating a strong midfield dynamic is vital for success. Arsenal’s 2003/04 Invincibles could rely on Gilberto Silva and Patrick Vieira’s solid partnership. Last season’s Premier League winners, Manchester City, possessed a well-functioning trio with Fernandinho as the defensive shield, David Silva retaining possession, and Kevin de Bruyne creating chances. The Gunners aren’t expected to form such perfection, but they can improve on recent times.

Arsenal’s midfield lacked balance last campaign. There wasn’t enough protection for the defence, which contributed to shipping in 51 league goals, the most among the top six sides. Unai Emery must address this area to have any chance of a successful debut season with the Gunners.

The third in our four-part Arsenal series looks at the midfielders. Do the current crop all have parts to play, or will some be replaced before the window slams shut tomorrow?
