The Bundesliga Preview - 6 pointer at the foot of the table in the midweek action

Tuesday 4th April 2017
It is an “English Week” in the Bundesliga and that means a leaner column from our German Football correspondent. The most important game of the week takes place on Wednesday with freefalling Augsburg up against Ingolstadt.

Borussia Dortmund vs Hamburger SV

Hamburg's home form will surely see them safe this season with Darmstadt and Mainz still to come. Dortmund should be looking for a reaction to the disappointing draw in the Revier Derby. Despite their injury problems, strength in depth they have means they should be able to make a few changes to freshen up without losing any threat.

Prediction – Home Win.

1.FC Köln vs Eintracht Frankfurt

A golden chance for Köln this week to put some space between them and the chasing pack. Frankfurt are tied on points but on a horrible run, despite battering Mönchengladbach last week they lacked the confidence to score and even missed a penalty.

Köln are a much better side at home than the largely insipid display at Hamburg. Modeste back on the scoresheet surely.

Prediction – Home Win.

SV Werder Bremen vs Schalke 04

Werder are THE form side in the Bundesliga after Bayern with a run of 16 from 18 points. They haven't done anything like this since the glory days of Thomas Schaaf. A win here could feasibly leave them just 2 points behind the Europa League qualifying spot despite being in danger of relegation all season. The Bundesliga is mental sometimes.

Schalke will have to make do without the suspended Bentaleb and injured Kolasinic. A point here would be a good result.

Prediction – Draw.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim vs FC Bayern München

If anyone is capable of stopping the Bayern juggernaut at the moment it is Hoffenheim. The result at the weekend was a tactical masterclass from Julian Nagelsmann and his side. There will be some mixed feeling from Süle and Rudy who have agreed transfers to Bayern in the summer but they will be desperate to prove they can match up to their future teammates.

I would expect some rotation from Ancelotti and Bayern in light of next week's Champions League match up against Real Madrid. The side that heads out today will probably be the one that lines up then so expect returns for Alonso and Vidal.

Prediction – Draw.

Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Hertha BSC

BMG started the Hecking era like a house on fire but a disappointing exit from the Europa league has been followed by just 1 point from the last 3 games. Such are the vagaries of the Bundesliga however that another win will not only (almost) secure safety but stick them right back in the hunt for the Europa League.

Hertha might still be 5th but they are wobbling again like last season. The Champions League is almost gone now and they are by no means certain to make the Europa spots. Augsburg at home on Sunday is critical to their chances.

Prediction – Home Win.

1.FSV Mainz 05 vs RB Leipzig

Mainz are in serious trouble. An onfield “pep talk” after the final whistle from one of the “Ultra” fans after defeat at Ingolstadt was not a good look. They have a seriously nasty run in as well. Ingolstadt and Augsburg along with Mainz will be making up places 15, 16 and 17.

Leipzig picked up some much-needed confidence against whipping boys Darmstadt and will be further boosted by the return of Timo Werner.

Prediction – Away win.

VfL Wolfsburg vs SC Freiburg

Both sides would probably take a point now looking at the other fixtures this week. However, Wolfsburg look a vastly different proposition now und Andries Jonker and should have too much for Freiburg.

There is a faint suspicion for me that Christian Streich's Freiburg side are just starting to run out of puff a bit from his high-intensity approach. I hope I am wrong.

Prediction – Home Win.

FC Augsburg vs FC Ingolstadt 04

The very definition of a 6 pointer. If Augsburg can somehow conjure up a win here they will be 10 points clear of the automatic relegation spots and probably doom Ingolstadt in the process. Nothing is ever certain with Augsburg however (other than getting humped by Bayern).

Ingolstadt know they are on their way to the last chance Saloon now despite last week's win over Mainz. A win here would give them some much-needed respite. Despite all that, a draw is the most likely result which will hardly please either side.

Prediction – Draw.

SV Darmstadt 98 vs Bayer 04 Leverkusen

Beyond fans of either side, you will be hard pressed to find anyone much caring about this fixture. Darmstadt are relegated in all but name. Leverkusen are treading water until a permanent boss is appointed. 3 points here will banish the last lingering fears of relegation.

Prediction – Away Win.
