Ishak Belfodil – Lukaku’s Replacement?

Wednesday 18th January 2017
We all know how often Romelu Lukaku is linked with a return to Chelsea or a move away from Everton to a so called bigger club, every day of every transfer window for the past 4/5 years and it does begin to get monotonous.....

However reports have never been stronger for the Belgian International to depart from the blue part of Merseyside, with the speculation amplified by the fact that Everton are on the verge of signing an Algerian Striker called Ishak Belfodil – will he be Lukaku's replacement?
Ishak Belfoldi; is already a journeyman. Now 25, the Algerian has failed to settle anywhere he has been so far, starting his career at Lyon making just 10 appearances. He then signed for Bologna where he managed eight goals in 33 games and his performances throughout his first season in Italy's top tier of football earning him a deserved offer to one of the giants of Serie A – Inter Milan.

After a great season with Bologna, Belfodil only featured eight times all season for Inter, reportedly claiming in the Italian Press that he was unsettled in Milan, further cementing his inability to adapt to new situations and surroundings.

He returned to Parma after his disappointing stint in Milan and again left the Serie A outfit after just one season where he scored only once. After a few injury-hit years he is currently plying his trade in Standard Liege where his record is much more impressive with 14 goals in 23 games for the Belgian side and for the first time since he was signed by Inter, excitement and expectation of him fulfilling his potential to the Striker that everyone expected him to be is firmly circling Belfodil.

A towering figure of 6 ft 3”, the Algerian International is known for his deft, kill-ball first touch and blistering acceleration. His finishing has always left a lot to be desired but he has clearly been working on it this season as he is considerably more lethal in front of goal, bolstered by his goal scoring tally this season.
Not many players on the planet could fill the shoes of Romelu Lukaku, who at the tender age of 23, has managed 132 goals in his short career already. However, the unlikeliness of Everton securing Champions League football again this season would lead to one thinking rationally that Everton's top scorer would be seeking a move away to further his career.

At the present moment, I do not think that Ishak Belfodil has the quality and experience in a top flight league to spearhead Everton's attack into securing a Champions League position up for grabs or winning for of the domestic cups. However, he would be an ideal backup striker and could, maybe, eventually become the club's out and out first choice number 9.

He certainly would offer another outlet for the Merseyside club, with a magnificent stature and the talent on the wings that Everton possess, the typical ‘Andy Carroll long ball' springs to mind if Everton are finding a particular defence hard to break down. But whether he can instantly replace the void that Romelu Lukaku will leave if he, himself, leaves – I highly doubt it.
