Jan Oblak is exactly the goalkeeper Juventus need to replace Gianluigi Buffon

Friday 22nd September 2017
Juventus need to find a long-term replacement for the (likely) retirement of Gianluigi Buffon at the end of the current season. And while they have been linked with several alternatives, Jan Oblak is the best option to replace Buffon. Especially on a long-term scenario.

Juventus could find themselves with a glaring hole at the goalkeeper position sooner than later. Even though they have enough depth with Gianluigi Buffon and Wojciech Szczesny this season, they must act quickly if they are thinking towards the future. Buffon will likely retire at the end of the current season, while the Polish international is not the club's answer on a long-term - or even short-term - scenario.

Therefore, The Old Lady need to find an alternative to fill the gap in the upcoming seasons. Several players have been linked with a potential move to Juventus in the near future. However, they need to act wisely to avoid making a mistake. And while there have been quality alternatives mentioned as possible arrivals, the best option for Juve right now is to make a move for Jan Oblak.

Jan Oblak is the best option for Juventus at the moment

Oblak has been linked with a move away from Atletico Madrid for quite some time. However, the Slovenia international decided to stay with the La Liga giants for at least one more year, considering the transfer ban that was imposed on the team in the past summer. But there is no question Oblak is ready for a bigger challenge. Considering some of the top teams in the world have already enquired about him, it is not crazy to think Oblak could leave the side during the next summer.

And if that's the case, then Juventus should be at the top of the list. Names such as Gianluigi Donnarumma, David De Gea and Thibaut Courtois have been linked with Juventus as well. However, Oblak is the most realistic target out of the aforementioned names. He might be expensive, but he is certainly worth the investment. Considering he is only 24 years old, Oblak has several years left before hitting his prime, and recent reports have indicated that the reigning Serie A champions have already engaged in preliminary talks with the Slovenia international.

What are the roadblocks to sign him?

As mentioned above, signing Oblak would be quite expensive. And there is a chance Atletico might not even want to sell their star goalkeeper. After all, the Slovenian signed a new deal with Atletico until the summer of 2021. And his latest contract extension included a €100M release clause. It sounds crazy to pay that kind of money for a goalkeeper. But he is worth it, and the numbers back him up.

Oblak has won the Zamora Trophy in each of the past two seasons with Atletico. The numbers have been impressive, as he has conceded just 39 goals in 67 league appearances over that span. But he is not only a Liga keeper. Oblak has thrived in the UEFA Champions League over the past two years as well. And that is exactly what Juventus need, because as one of the top teams in the Serie A, they need to find a goalkeeper who can be reliable at both the domestic and European level.

Talks are reportedly at an early stage. And to be fair, it is not clear whether Juventus will land Oblak or not. But they should make a move for him if the chance arises. All things considered, he is the best alternative to replace Buffon once the veteran retires.
