Are Manchester United out of the title race?

Tuesday 17th January 2017
Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic has spoken out over his former employer's title hopes and it's not good news for fans of the Serbian. Vidic believes United's chances of claiming the title are completely gone – apparently, 12 points is too much to recoup.

However, I strongly disagree; as per usual.

Manchester United overturned a 12 point deficit at the end of January to Newcastle in 1995/96. What more proof do you need Nemanja? Arsenal closed a 12 point gap to United in 97/98 and that was from the end of February!

A hefty points gap doesn't mean a side has the title won as we've seen so many times before, the only issue is whether or not United can pull themselves together enough to chase the leaders down. I say it's the only issue; there are other problems in the league to look at before dismissing the Red Devils as title challengers:

Chelsea v Costa

The press is all over the Diego Costa situation like a rash at the moment and it's easy to see why. His manager has spoken out about his poor attitude, the owner has spoken out over his disdain for the player's behaviour and the player himself has issued a come and get me plea to former club Atletico Madrid.

Costa has trained by himself for two days and will no doubt be forced into playing for the Blues until his future can be resolved but will he be the same lethal striker with so many background issues – no chance.

The Arsenal Slowdown

Every season Arsenal look like serious title contenders right up until the point their squad starts to struggle with fatigue. Usually, around March/April, Arsenal look slower and less threatening – it's inevitable and even the pundits will start discussing it before long.

Spurs Car Crash

Tottenham are so prone to crashing out towards the end of the season that they even had a seatbelt motif on their home shirts a few seasons ago. It didn't help and Spurs' season ground to halt yet again – even last season they couldn't handle the pressure of being the only club capable of catching the Premier League leaders: not title contenders.

Historical Liverpool

What do you need to say about Liverpool and their long-standing pursuit of the Premier League title? It keeps slipping through their hands no matter how hard they try. They will probably fall out of the top four by the end of March and struggle to claim the fourth spot – this isn't bias, it's just how it is.

Bad luck Liverpool.

Manchester City

Pep Guardiola looked so defeated on Sunday afternoon that he's more than likely in therapy right now trying to recover from it – no chance.

So is Nemanja Vidic right that United are out of the title race given 12 points have been chased down in the past and the other clubs ahead of the Red Devils have current, historical and long standing issues?

No, he is not right and you can expect United to challenge right up to the last day.
