Stoke City sign Choupo-Moting on a free

Tuesday 8th August 2017
The opening Premier League weekend is nearly here and players are still being bought by numerous clubs. One club that has just signed a player ahead of this weekend is Stoke City. The Potters have just snapped up German born, Cameroonian, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.

So who is Choupo-Moting? Born in Hamburg, Choupo-Moting started at youth level in Germany. Playing at clubs like FC St. Pauli and Hamburger SV. During 2007 the striker appeared with Hamburger SV II. After that, he appeared with the main squad. He was also loaned out to 1. FC Nurnberg during the 2009/10 season as well.

By 2011 Choupo-Moting was on the move again. This time signing with 1. FSV Mainz 05. The six-foot-three striker would go on to make 74 appearances scoring 20 times. His spell would last until 2014. This was when he would sign with Schalke 04 after his contract ran out at Mainz 05.
During his time at Schalke 04, Choupo-Moting would score 18 Bundesliga goals in 82 appearances. His all-time stats show that he has scored 56 goals in 285 games. Although he is considered a striker, the Cameroon international can also play as a left winger.

Although born in Germany, Choupo-Moting actually plays for Cameroon at international level. He earned his first call-up in 2010. He represented at the 2010 World Cup. Since then, the 28-year-old has made 42 appearances and has scored 13 times for Cameroon.

His style of play is described as a composed finisher and a powerful dribbler.  Choupo-Moting can play as a striker or a winger on either side as well as other central roles. He also displays himself with a high work rate. This would be something that Stoke City boss, Mark Hughes would want in his squad at this moment in time.

Choupo-Moting becomes the sixth signing by The Potters this summer. Other players brought in, include Darren Fletcher from West Brom, Joe Bursik from AFC Wimbledon, Tre Pemberton from Blackburn and Josh Tymon from Hull City. They have also loaned in Chelsea defender, Kurt Zouma.
Stoke have also let go of a number of players too. Six players were released and four of them were sold to other clubs. Phil Bardsley and Jonathan Walters were sold to Burnley while Aston Villa bought Glenn Whelan. Marko Arnautovic was signed by West Ham for a fee of £20m rising to £25m. In total, Stoke's sales this summer add up to around £30m.

The business of selling players this summer has been interesting by Mark Hughes as he has stated his intention of trying to bring in more players. One deal that is under the radar at the moment is between Bruno Martins Indi. Stoke had recent contact with Porto for his signing but wasn't subjected to an agreement. Recent reports have linked him with the club again and it is only a matter of time to see if Sparky can get a deal done for him.

Bruno Martins Indi had a season-long loan spell at Stoke City last season and impressed with his above average performances. He could be a key signing especially alongside the Chelsea-loanee, Kurt Zouma.

Mark Hughes looks like he is set to use a formation with five at the back. With Choupo-Moting arriving at the club it looks like Mark Hughes will be content in his attacking options but if he can seal a deal with Bruno Martins Indi he could utilise three centre-backs in Ryan Shawcross, Kurt Zouma and Bruno Martins Indi.

For my sins, I'm a season ticket holder at Stoke City, I have been proud to watch them for over 20 years. I follow most of the UK leagues and the major European ones too, and I've been told that I talk way too much about football.
