West Ham continue to signal intent with Felipe Anderson signing

Tuesday 17th July 2018

West Ham United's spending is adding up this summer. Since Manuel Pellegrini's arrival as manager, there were originally issues over money to sign players. But the Chilean boss looks to now have his wishes granted; as several players arrive at the London Stadium for the 2018/19 campaign.

The latest arrival is Lazio's, Felipe Anderson, for a fee around £42million, which could rise further after various add-ons and expected bonuses. This signing signals huge intent, with the London club clearly doing all they can to break the vice-grip on the current Premier League top six. Last year the transfer record spent by the club was for Stoke City's Marko Arnautovic at £25 million. The man from Austria impressed, but they've almost doubled that transfer fee with a deal for the Brazilian Anderson.

Finishing 13th last season was probably far worse than West Ham fans would have hoped. With the players coming in, those top-half aspirations are looking to be more realistic this time around. Players such as Ryan Fredericks, Issa Diop, Lukasz Fabianski, Jack Wilshere and Andriy Yarmolenko joining adds plenty of depth to the squad. Brazilian defender Fabian Balbuena is another name to join the list as Pellegrini continues to spend the big money.

Recent news that both Andy Carroll and Winston Reid will remain sidelined for at least three months isn't ideal. But with additions coming in, there is a reassurance that all positions are strengthened, with depth aplenty. Who knows, we could still see even more money being spent before the season kicks-off in just under a month's time.

Felipe Anderson Pereira Gomes had been an integral part of Lazio's recent success. Five seasons with the Serie A outfit meant the 25-year-old has appeared 137 times. Within that time period, he has bagged 25 goals. Anderson is considered an extremely gifted talent. Known for being incredibly pacy and possessing great dribbling skills, he can take on defenders with consummate ease. Used mainly as a winger, he can also play as a forward or even a central midfielder if required. Despite his obvious goal-threat, he's also a work-horse and a willing runner for the team.

Pellegrini will likely deploy Anderson as a winger and that means other players will now be looking over their shoulders. Considering Yarmolenko plays the same position as his Brazilian counterpart, it wouldn't be surprising if both players start on opposite flanks. They could alternate each wing and cause all sorts of havoc for any Premier League defence when they're on song. Don't forget, they also have the aforementioned Arnautovic up top.

Other attacking players that West Ham possess include Javier Hernandez and Manuel Lanzini. You can't say they don't have more depth than they did last season. With Anderson expected to be part of an ambitious side could we see a real contender for change in the top of the food-chain? Or will they be just capable of a top-half finish?

The Hammers are becoming a club known for spending bigger than before and that is a recurring theme for any Premier League team. The Stratford-based outfit will be competing in their seventh consecutive Premier League campaign. Being well established and now playing in a stadium that holds 57,000 West Ham are showing signs of long-term plans for the future. Aiming towards European football is a promise yet to be fulfilled, but signing Anderson is a gateway to the possibility

With the players arriving in the past month or so we could see some top quality football from West Ham. Anderson will be one player who they'll hoping can make an immediate impression.

For my sins, I'm a season ticket holder at Stoke City, I have been proud to watch them for over 20 years. I follow most of the UK leagues and the major European ones too, and I've been told that I talk way too much about football.
